I Daci, guidati dal re Decebalo, opponevano un\u2019eroica resistenza. L\u2019imperatore di Roma, Traiano aveva mobilitato l\u2019intero esercito dell\u2019impero per garantirsi la vittoria. \u00a0Voleva impossessarsi dell\u2019oro della Dacia, ed eliminare soprattutto la minaccia rappresentata dai Daci e dai loro alleati al confine orientale.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ultima fortificazione dei Daci, la cittadella nei Monti Orastiei, cadde nelle mani del nemico. Nonostante l\u2019accanita resistenza, Sarmisegetusa venne assediata e conquistata. Alcuni suoi difensori, tra cui anche Decebalo, riuscirono a lasciare la roccaforte e decisero di continuare la resistenza contro i Romani all\u2019interno del paese. Inseguito dalla cavalleria romana, Decebalo si suicid\u00f2, preferendo morire piuttosto che essere catturato vivo dai nemici. Ingegnoso nel tendere trappole, era un buon guerriero e sapeva trarre profitto dalla vittoria, ma anche uscire a testa alta dalla sconfitta. Le fonti antiche lo presentano come un nemico temuto di Roma, ma anche come un guerriero audace. Il fatto che sia stato un guerriero coraggioso e un nemico temuto \u00e8 dimostrato tanto dalla guerra contro Domiziano, che aveva vinto, quanto dalle due guerre contro i romani negli anni 101-102 e 105-106 d.C. Nell\u2019ultima guerra, Decebalo fu vinto definitivamente, e come ci racconta Cassio Dione \u201c<em>Quando Decebalo vide che il suo trono e l\u2019intero paese erano nelle mani del nemico, e che lui stesso era in pericolo di essere catturato come prigioniero, si tolse la vita.
